There are some songs especially made for a certain artist that, for some reasons, didn’t get recorded by them. And as it turns out, other singers are more fit to own such songs. This happens oftentimes in the music industry. Take for instance the song “Unbelievable” which the country music band Diamond Rio had popularized in the late 1990’s.
Did you know that this tune was originally written for the late singer George Jones? You’ve read it right, folks. According to songwriters Al Anderson and Jeffrey Steele, the beautiful song was supposed to be called “She’s So Kissable” set to a key of E or A and accompanied by a bass string. It could have been a perfect tune for Jones. But for some reasons, the country legend never got the chance to record the song. Until one day, the “Meet in the Middle“ singer came across the tune and they liked it instantly. Anderson knew it from the start that the band would love their penned song.
“I know all of a sudden they liked it and cut it and put it out, and it was the most played Arista record that year. We got an award twice for that, for two years,” said Anderson.
About the Song “Unbelievable”
Diamond Rio released “Unbelievable” as the title track and second single on their album of the same name in October 1998. The song quickly climbed and reached the country chart’s topmost spot becoming the band’s 21st No. 1 song. Likewise, the hit record gave them their first-ever entry on the pop chart. The single peaked at No. 36 on Billboard Hot 100. Meanwhile, the record garnered favorable reviews from Billboard magazine. Music critic Devorah Evans Price specifically said about the song,
[It] “sparkles with the band’s musicianship, from the frisky piano to the infectious guitar work.”
Wherever he is now, Jones is certainly happy to know that this song, originally made for him, has found success from Diamond Rio’s vocals. Also, it’s likely that he doesn’t have any regret in not recording the song considering the commercial fame it achieved.
