Toby Keith and Tricia Lucus prove why they are a power couple when it comes to love. The country star got lucky when he met his wife in 1981 at an Oklahoma nightclub. He was the first one to see her and have interest. It was like love at first sight for the duo.
Country music crooner Toby Keith was born on July 8, 1961, in Clinton, Oklahoma. At eight years old, he had his first guitar and started playing instruments. The young Keith joined Highland West Junior High and attended Moore High School as well. Like any music lover in high schooler, he formed a band with his friends.
Later on, a young Keith didn’t pursue a musical career right after graduating. He applied in the oil fields to make a steady income. Yet, his passion for music still has the fire while still working in the oil fields. The soon-to-be superstar created a band called ‘Easy Money Band.’
Keith and Lucus met when they were 20 and 19 years old. The pair got married in 1984 after three years of dating. They have shared 36 years of blissful matrimony. Lucus gushes in an interview how her husband was larger-than-life than any guys. The singer exudes confidence that could capture a kind-hearted, strong woman like Tricia Lucus.
Moreover, her great impression of her husband didn’t stop when they married. Keith presented himself and decided to adopt Lucus’ daughter, Shelley. After that, they welcomed two more children into their growing family. They had daughter Krystal and son Stelen which brought extra happiness to the family.
Like any couple starting, they weren’t financially stable. The family man barely makes $50,000 annually working in the oil fields. What’s more impressive is the fact he never stopped playing music. The family thought they could live off Keith’s small wage. But, an unexpected event happened. The oil industry went downhill, and so the small compensation got smaller for the family of five. Thanks to the company’s lousy business, the future superstar put pursued a music career.
The couple’s journey in entering the music scene is tough. Toby Keith’s wife even experienced disheartening remarks from other people. Keith shared in an interview with ‘Country Weekly’ how dozens of people were against it. They kept on pushing Lucus to stop the superstar from pursuing music. Furthermore, these bashers insisted that Keith get “a real job” like a 9-5. The unsupportive people saw having a successful music career as too good to be true.
Well, being the good wife, Lucus told the haters to stop interfering with their decisions. She fully supported her husband’s choice to pursue music as Lucus saw how good enough Keith is. They were ready to gamble.
She was also curious if it will work and, thankfully, it did.
His biggest break happened when the CEO of Mercury Records, Harold Shedd, gave him a chance. He listened to the aspiring singer’s demo and signed him for a recording contract. They published Keith’s first self-titled album in 1993. His debut single ‘Should’ve Been a Cowboy’ blasted the hit charts and became a classic of the nineties. It was the most played song of the 1990s and dominated the Hot Country Songs chart.
It was admirable how the couple’s love is the same despite Keith’s fame skyrocketing. His tough exterior melts and turns into a teddy bear when he’s with his strong-willed wife. Lucus said that he’s romantic and gives her a bouquet. But this country lady is practical. She told him to provide her with an outfit or take her out instead of flowers that wilt.
With the support and encouragement of Lucus, Keith earned a total of $500 million net worth. He shared that he loves performing but still prefers to be with his wife and kids—spoken like a true family man. Lucus and their daughters, Shelley and Krystal, opened a business called SwingDish. It’s a high-quality women’s golf apparel company.
Currently, Toby Keith and Tricia Lucus are living a comfortable life. They are happy with their kids and grandchildren. If you need proof that true love exists, then Keith and Lucus’ love story is the answer. The power couple is an inspiration for making it through hard times together. We can only wish many more years for the lovely couple!
