The Magnificent Seven

The Magnificent Seven is a 2016 American Western action film directed by Antoine Fuqua, who is best known for his Award-winning Academy film Training Day. It showcases some of the brightest stars in Hollywood: Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onfrio, Lee Byung-hun, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier, Haley Bennet, and Peter Sarsgaard.

The film is a Seven Samurai re-imagined.  It is considered one of the greatest films of all time. But this was not the first time it was re-imagined into the context of the Old West. This film was originally made back in 1960, directed by the one and only John Sturges.

Fuqua has stated that he had always loved western films. In an interview, he said that he approached the making of the movie with his grandmother in mind. The top question that he would ask himself is,

“Would my grandmother enjoy this film that I’m making?”

Fuqua has also stated that he had massive respect for Akira Kurosawa and his films.

In its initial development, there was a star-studded line-up. But eventually, the titular role landed on Denzel Washington. The seven was made up of talented actors that genuinely made the Magnificent Seven come alive.

An Action-Packed Movie

The movie held much promise with its trailer. It showed both the dramatic side of the Old West and the much action that the era had. The trailer wasn’t short of introducing its main protagonists too.

Come, see the trailer below!

It shows a very dynamic cast in its writing and script. The characters come from all walks of life. And, Fuqua made it to a point to cast diverse actors as he said that there was much more diversity in the Old West than the other Hollywood movies would like to sell the masses.

Each character was weaved into certain archetypes that would fit the demand of the action-packed narrative. They were well-rounded as characters, but the overall script was a little short of magnificent. As much as it is a good film, it didn’t really offer anything new to the table. Nonetheless, it’s an absolute delight to watch!
