I’m trusting to, the unseen hand
That guides me through, this weary land
And some sweet day, I’ll reach that strand
Still guided by, the unseen hand.

Souls’ Chapel is Marty Stuart’s 12th studio album, and his second album with his band, the Fabulous Superlatives, released in 2005. The entire album is devoted to gospel songs. With this album, Stuart has turned his keen eye to what he refers to as “Southern Culture”. Off this album is “The Unseen Hand”. An ironic series of events that led to its creation.

First, Stuart’s ex-father-in-law, Johnny Cash, died, triggering an alcoholic spree after two years of abstinence. He was arrested for drinking and driving. He felt so ashamed and like rubbish. When he got out of jail, he went for a show in Chicago the next morning. At that show, gospel greats gave him a guitar and he felt that it was an instrument of light. That moment gave him the inspiration to make this record.

Life vs. The Unseen Hand

Bad things happen to our lives along our journey. There is always a reason why these things happen at particular times in our lives. However, we can be certain that God is not the cause of these evils. God did not cause any of the dilemmas in our lives. There is a hand that directs us along the way. In the middle of it, we may not see it, but at some time as we echo on the screws and tries of our lives, it is amazing to see how it has all fitted together.

God says,

“My thoughts are not like yours, and my ways are different from yours. As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways and thoughts above yours.”

(Isaiah 55:8-9)

How To Recognize The Unseen Hand

The Lord tells us that He expects us to confess His hand in all things. One way to do that is to be pure and trusting. Another way to see God’s immersion in our lives is to truly know unlikely chances as due to Him and not to chance. Lastly, we should use the patterns, which God has provided for us to see through the lies of Satan and recognize the unseen hand of God in all things.

God believes we can recognize His hand in all things. We can believe like a child, not distinguish miracles as due to chance, and recognize truth by the patterns He has given us. What about you? How do you plan to stack up at confessing His hand in all things?
