Can You Believe That Chris Stapleton Penned These Songs?

It took fourteen long years for Chris Stapleton to become an overnight success. Now the soul-country is making a name anywhere else. After moving to Nashville in 2001, the Kentucky native jumped off as a songwriter for other singers. He spent his days lashing up hits for Kenny Chesney, Josh Turner and Darius Rucker, and many others. Although his own bands came and went along the way, he remained on his feet. Stapleton is really one of the industry’s best-kept secrets: a songwriter, guitarist, and big bang singer whose pen is just as mighty as his voice. In this series, we will share some of the songs that helped get him there. It’s no other than the songs he wrote for other artists.

Can You Believe That Chris Stapleton Penned These Songs? 1

2005: “There’s More Where That Came From” by Lee Ann Womack

Released more than a decade before Chris Stapleton’s career-breaking performance at the 2015 CMA Awards, this outset song to Lee Ann Womack’s 2005 album is country music up front. Womack’s voice was accompanied with fiddle, baritone guitar, and pedal steel. “There’s More Where That Came From” screams a tale of dishonest hearts and low-cost motel rooms with equal parts of aching and passion.

2007: “Never Wanted Nothing More” by Kenny Chesney

“Never Wanted Nothing More” gave Kenny Chesney the fastest-climbing top hit of his career. It took two months to scale the country charts. The song’s plot moves at a quick pace. It is about a character buying his first car, losing his virginity and getting married within the first two verses.

2015: “Winning Streak” by Ashley Monroe

Monroe, Stapleton and Jessi Alexander penned “Winning Streak” together, adding energy and blow to an album that often capitalizes its most beautiful instances for the slower numbers. It is a neo-traditional rocket, focused at a swift pace by bar room piano, roadhouse guitar beats, and saloon-worthy swing.

So far, the first three list we shared was recorded by country music artists. You would be much more amazed once you see the other-genre artists Stapleton has given his service to.
