A young, fearless and uncompromising preacher by the name of Dudley Atkins Tying was behind the hymn “Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus.” The hymn is as bold as he is and it gives encouragement for us to follow such step. During his short lifetime, Tying made a great impact on the lives of many people by spreading God’s words. And when he died, he left a heritage that continues to touch each and every generation that comes. Tying met an accident while visiting in the country town. He was watching the operation of a corn threshing machine in a barn when he accidentally got injured. The laceration on his arm was severe causing him to develop an infection for four days after. He was later declared dead due to shock and great blood loss. On his deathbed, a group of sorrowing friends and fellow ministers asked for his last words. Feebly, he whispered
“Let us all stand up for Jesus.”
That gave birth to the hymn “Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus.”
Dudley Tying’s Short but Inspiring Life
Earlier, he served as an assistant to his father Rev. Stephen Tying who was a pastor at the Episcopalian Church of Epiphany in Philadephia. Eventually, he succeeded his father as the senior minister of the said congregation.
In 1858, thousands of people witnessed what was called “The Work of God in Philadelphia.” During this gathering, Tying stood out as the most powerful among all the participating ministers. More than 5,000 men participated in the said meeting and were eager to hear the young preacher’s sermon. Tying’s preaching focused on Exodus 10:11,
Ye that are men, go and serve the Lord.
After that, 1,000 of the men were converted. With that number of people who have committed their lives to Christ, they described the sermon as “one of the most successful of the time.” Indeed, Tying was able to rouse the entire city with his sermon.
