You are my special angel
Sent from up above
The Lord smiled down on me
And sent an angel to love (to love)
You are my special angel
Right from paradise
I know you’re an angel
Heaven is in your eyes
…goes the opening lines of the 1957 Bobby Helms‘ hit, “My Special Angel.” Just like Helms’ Fraulein, this is also a love song. In this song, the man uses metaphors comparing his lady to an angel, which was sent from up above. He considers his lover to be a gift from God who has blessed him for all the good.
To be compared to an angel by your lover is maybe one of the sweetest comparisons to a person. An angel is defined to be a spiritual being superior to humans in power and intelligence (Merriam-Webster). Also, it is believed that these angels are sent by God to protect us from all evil in this world. They serve as our guardians and watch over us in everything we do. With this, being compared to an angel is indeed a great compliment you’ll ever get from a friend, your family, lover, or from other people.
Of Love and Angels (A Reflection)
God is indeed great for He has given us the gift of “love.”
Love conquers all. I personally believe in this statement. Love is a variety of feelings, states, and attitudes that range from interpersonal affection to pleasure. It is a combination of pleasure and affection that we feel towards others. Nonetheless, it is never limited to other people. Love can also be shared and shown not only to people but also to other beings like animals and to the things that we care about.
On the other hand, angels were created by God to be of help to Him. Prior to the creation of man, angels have already thrived in the heavens. They are perceived to be superior beings created by God. Each angel was created for a specific task or mission, of which they received instantaneous knowledge at the moment of their creation. Moreover, they are an image of love. They are sent by God from the heavens to look after His beings on earth. Hence, God’s angels is a form of His love for us.
So if a person tells you that you’re a special angel from up above, you should be flattered. Because for sure that person may have seen the goodness in you. Moreover, that person indeed loves you…
Penned by Jimmy Duncan, “My Special Angel” is song published in 1957 and was first recorded by Bobby Helms in the same year. On the other hand, Anita Kerr Singers sang the backing vocals of the song.
“My Special Angel” became a crossover hit in 1957 for Bobby Helms. On the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the song peaked at number seven. Moreover, it spent four weeks at number one on the US Country Music chart. Crossing over, the single made the R&B chart as well, charting at number eight.
Most noteworthy, “My Special Angel” became a gold record.
