Country star Kenny Chesney is not only gifted with exceptional musical talents but a golden heart too. When the Category 5 Hurricane Irma devastated his hometown in the Virgin Islands last fall, Chesney reached out to his fellowmen in every way he can. Accordingly, the singer put up the Love for Love City foundation to offer immediate help to the victims of the calamity. Yet, the desire to help has grown stronger in the singer’s heart. Hence, with the impending release of his new album Songs for the Saints, Chesney decided to donate all of the project’s proceeds to his non-profit organization.

The Get Along” singer has always been fascinated with the Carribean. He finds it to be the best place for writing songs and many of his hits centered on this subject. Thus, it’s truly heartbreaking for him seeing not only his own home but his entire beloved island in havoc after the catastrophe. In a statement, Chesney said,

“When I realized the help that had to happen, I did what I could to facilitate getting things done. But even more powerful to me were the people of the No Shoes Nation, who stepped up and gave what they could. They showed me how people come together in times of crisis to lift up people they don’t even know.”

The Tribute Album

Songs for the Saints consists of eleven singles. At the time Chesney was writing his album’s title track, the hurricane hit the islands. Then two days later, he wrote the song “Love for Love City” which his foundation got its name. At the suggestion of a friend, Chesney named the album as such and made it a tribute to all the victims and heroes alike during the storm. The singer revealed that he needed to write those songs without the need for a plan.

“I wanted to make a record that shows the spirit and resilience of the people who live on those islands, who are generationally tied to them, or are raising families there,” Chesney said.

His friends Jimmy Buffet, Ziggy Marley and Mindy Smith helped him out in the recording and production of the album. Just like Chesney, they also had a strong liking for life on the island and passionate about helping others.

“To me, it’s about the hope, the strength, the joy and the courage they are bringing to the task of rebuilding after a kind of destruction no one has ever seen before. To let them know, they’re not only not forgotten months later, but we’re holding them up as inspiration – and offering help in any way that we can, including music. Because music heals, it inspires, and this is for them.”
