The Happy Contradictions of “There’s a Fool Born Every Minute” by Skeeter Davis

Skeeter Sings “There’s a Fool Born Every Minute”

There’s an interesting contradiction in Skeeter Davis’ song “There’s a Fool Born Every Minute.” The backing tracks are characteristically happy. You would immediately think it’s a certified light-hearted bop. It’s upbeat and charming, with its snare drum beat and violin backgrounds. But once you take a good listen to what Davis is singing, you would stop and think. Do I hear this right? What did she just sing?

Well, this is me telling you that yes, what you heard is right. Davis does an amazing job singing poignant lyrics with a happy tune. Generally speaking, the contradiction can be easily be looked over if we just glossed over the song.

There is a famous saying that goes “There’s a sucker born every minute,” which can loosely translate to “anybody can be conned.” Here in Davis’ song, she sings about how the man that she was with broke her heart. She also proceeded to call herself a fool for believing him. The lyrics would project the emotions that she felt, but the overall vibe casts a rosy feel to the body of the song.

Come, listen for yourself to the catchy tune here!

Success and Hits

In the early years of Davis’ career, she was part of the popular band ‘The Davis Sisters.’ They mostly toured  in the South, and they recorded a cover of “I Forgot More Than You’ll Ever Know.” But after the tragic death of Bettie Jack Davis and the consequent stint with Georgia Davis, she pursued her career and flourished.

Even in her struggles, Davis still pursued her music. It well might have been her only outlet at that time. And despite everything, she has achieved great things in her life. She has multiple number one hits, both she recorded herself and written. Davis was one of the first women to achieve major stardom in the country music industry as a soloist and was hailed as an “extraordinary country/pop singer.” Her life can be considered as turbulent, but it contains pockets of sunshine. And, that’s what can also be seen in her music – particularly with “There’s a Fool Born Every Minute.”
