The Song’s Content
The narrator in the song together with her lover are both trying to find a way to end his current relationship with another woman. They were obviously in love with each other. However, they are not allowed to be together because the narrator’s lover is currently in a relationship with another woman. In the song, the narrator has a step-by-step plan to get rid of her lover’s girlfriend. She has four steps to make this happen.
“Lesson number one we’ve just begun to hurt her so
And with lesson two she’ll long for you when lights are low…
When we get to lesson three when she gets down on her knees…
And with lesson four there will be no more for her to bear…”
With all of the narrator’s step, it will inevitably lead to someone’s heart to be broken.
Rosanne Cash’s Recording
Rosanne Cash recorded the song in 1987 as a solo artist. However, there was a recording of Cash together with the songwriter of the song, John Hiatt. They recorded their duet in 1983, but it was not released. Cash’s solo recording became part of her album King’s Record Shop.
Chart Performance
“The Way We Make A Broken Heart” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Thus, making this Rosanne Cash’s fifth No. 1 song on the country chart. Moreover, her song became No. 1 on the Canadian chart. Meanwhile, her album reached No. 6 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. It also secured a spot on the Billboard 200, entering the No. 138th position.
When the song was first released, it was not originally recorded by Rosanne. The first recording of the song was musician Ry Cooder in 1980.
