“Honesty” by Rodney Atkins is one of the more underrated country love songs out there which is sad. This song has a sweet tune, a romantic feel all over it, and a great message. The core of the love song can be seen in the chorus, specifically in the lyrics:
Honesty, sincerity, tenderness, and trust
I mean, it can’t get any clearer than that. In the song’s story, the couple is going through a divorce and is trying to talk things out or sort things out between the both of them. They meet in a restaurant and the man asks his wife to write down a list of things that she may want to take after the divorce.
The wife hands him back a list and he opens it expecting to see a list of objects she wants but instead finds what his wife actually wants, “honesty, sincerity, tenderness, and trust.”
It is a powerful scene with a message that really makes us think. At the very base of a relationship, these are the values that should have made it and should still remain as the relationship builds up. We sometimes forget these values and sometimes need reminding of it.
As great as that message is in a relationship, it doesn’t necessarily only speak of romantic relationships.
The Other Message in Rodney Atkins’ “Honesty”
Honesty, sincerity, tenderness, and trust are values that we should all have. We sometimes get so caught up in the stress of our lives that we forget to treat others with respect, especially to those who help us every day.
The other message of this song reminds us that despite the many stress and problems that come our way, we shouldn’t forget to be respectful and kind. We are already busy dealing with our problems, we need others to be there for us and help us when we need to, but we can’t do that if we are the type of person to just leave others hanging.
Honesty, sincerity, tenderness, and trust always be reminded of these values and act on them.
