Rod Stewart And Kenny Loggins’ “For The First Time”: The Story 3

The “Soundtrack King”, Kenny Loggins first recorded the song “For The First Time” in 1996. It is also the soundtrack of the movie “One Fine Day” starring Michelle Pfeiffer and George Clooney. In the same year, Rod Stewart released the song which made its way to the hearts of the listeners. The two artists might have different ways and style at singing but both gave justice to the song. With this, country music enthusiasts don’t know which side to buy. Nevertheless, either Stewart or Loggins’ version, still soothing to the ears and touching the soul.

The Reception…

The song was Loggins’ one and only No.1 hit on the Adult Contemporary Chart. Furthermore, “For the First Time” spent two weeks at No.1 and peaked at No.6 on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart. Unfortunately, the song did not make it to the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This is for the reason that it was not made available as a commercial single. With this, it was ineligible to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. But the good thing about it, the song was nominated as the “Best Original Song”.

Meanwhile, Stewart’s version did not make it to the top. But it was still a success, a success in a way that listeners embraced it with positive feedback. It might not be reached as top song on the chart but in the hearts of Stewart’s supporters, it surely did.

Loggins’ Music Video…

The music video shows Loggins singing the song in a giant manor house and an empty theater on a rainy night. In addition, there are inserted clips and scenes from the movie “One Fine Day”. It ends with Loggins’ walking down a street in a heavy rain. Interestingly, this is the first Loggins’ music video to feature without his trademark facial hair, as he shaved them in the 1990’s.

“For The First Time” Interpretation…

Simply the song portrays the revival of someone’s feelings toward knowing what love is. After a long time of inability to sense the feeling of affection, finally, it was felt again. Merely, understanding and learning that love still exists, for the first time.

The Sensational Lyrics…

Are those your eyes? Is that your smile?
I been looking at you for ever, yet I never saw you before.
Are these your hands? Holding mine?
Now I wonder how I could have been so blind.

And for the first time, I am looking in your eyes.
For the first time, I’m seeing who you are.
I can’t believe how much I see,
When you’re looking back at me.
Now I understand what love is, love is
For the first time

Can this be real? This be true?
Am I the person I was this morning?
And are you the same you?
Its all so strange. How can it be?
All along this love was right in front of me.

And for the first time, I am looking in your eyes.
For the first time, I am seeing who you are.
I can’t believe how much I see,
When you’re looking back at me.
Now I understand what love is, love is
For the first time.

Such a long time ago,
I had given up on finding this emotion,
Ever again, but you’re here with me now,
Yes I found you somehow, and I’ve never been so sure.
For the first time, I am looking in your eyes,
I’m seeing who you are,
Can’t believe how much I see,
When you’re looking back at me.
Now I understand what love is
Love is, for the first time.
