About the Song
Recorded two years earlier, “Going Out Like That” was Reba McEntire‘s first single for Nash Icon released on January 6, 2015. It is the lead single off her 27th studio album, Love Somebody. Rhett Akins, Ben Hayslip, and Jason Sellers penned the song while Reba’s longtime producer Tony Brown produced it for Nash Icon.
Originally, “Going Out Like That” was recorded by American country music group Love and Theft for an album on RCA Nashville. However, it never materialized and was not released.
Furthermore, the song drew quite a number of fans. In fact, it became a no. 1 hit on the Country iTunes Charts. On the other hand, it debuted at no. 28 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and eventually peaked at no. 23. Its highest list on Billboard though is at no. 2 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles. In addition, it also charted in other music charts. It reached no. 28 on the Billboard Country Airplay, and no. 37 on Billboard Country in Canada.
So far, “Going Out Like That” has sold 207,000 copies by the end of July in 2015.
A Redemption Song
“Going Out Like That” is an anthem for anyone who is heartbroken and undergoing a breakup. Although it is not necessarily talking about Reba’s personal experience, it is still interesting how the song gives her the much-needed sassiness.
Showing women’s empowerment, the music video features a girl who just came from a split up with her boyfriend. Instead of sitting at home and doing nothing, she wears tight jeans, heels and a tank top. She then proceeds to her favorite bar. There, she finds a handsome guy and throws back a couple of shots. She thinks that it was the perfect medicine for her broken heart. Later, she and the man dance, flirt and eventually end up in a restaurant to share a milkshake.
Throughout the entire video, the girl is the “life of the party,” not letting any negativity get her down. She shows that sometimes, all your heart needs is a stiff drink, a flirtatious night and an opportunity to let loose.
Indeed, the song was perfect for Reba as she expressed her delight in having sung and recorded the song. She said:
“When you listen to thousands of songs trying to find just the right one to record, a really great song jumps out at you. That’s exactly what ‘Going Out Like That’ did to me! It jumped out because it’s a great song with up-tempo sassiness (sic)!!!”
