In 2006, country music trio, Rascal Flatts released a single for their album Me And My Gang, becoming their fifth Top single on Billboard’s Country Singles chart. “What Hurts The Most” is the song we are talking about. It is not theirs, originally. However, their cover version almost seemed like the song is their own. Looks like they were never hurt, did they?

Song Standing and Background

Jeffrey Steele and Steve Robson penned the country song, “What Hurts the Most”. Mark Wills originally recorded it on his 2003 album, And the Crowd Goes Wild. The same year, the song also appeared on Jeffrey Steele’s album, You Gotta Start Somewhere. Faith Hill had also intended to include the song on her 2005 album Fireflies. Although she had recorded the song, her version did not make the final cut. Moreover, in 2004, the pop group, Bellefire, recorded the song. In the United Kingdom, this song first became a hit when the former S Club 7 member Jo O’Meara covered this for her debut solo release. In 2007 the German Eurodance trio Cascada released another version. Despite the heartbreak lyric, they interpreted it as an up-tempo Europop song. Their version making hits in both UK and Us charts impelled Gary LeVox of Rascal Flatts to crack,

“That’s what hurt us the most.”

Rascal Flatts’ version reached the sixth spot on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, becoming the Rascal Flatts’ first Top 10 pop hit. Also, the song reached the top spot on the Adult Contemporary charts.

What Could Hurt the Most?

Steve Robson presented Jeffrey Steele with a partial track, and Steele decided to come up with lyrics to finish the track. Originally, he had desired to write a song about the loss of his father. Instead, he went with a more general theme of lost love. After singing the lyrics, he loved how sad the song sounded. Steele loved it more when Robson recommended that it be chronicled in a higher key to sound more demonstrative. After finishing it, they were worried no one could perform it because of its high notes. But, behold, Gary LeVox from Rascal Flatts heard it and loved it. They ended up making a great record of the song.

What hurts the most
Was being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away.

Do you love someone secretly? You better tell them now. The message of this song: Do not wait to tell someone how you feel about him or her. Do not hold back your feelings. You may be too late.

Listen how “What Hurts The Most” by Rascal Flatts is played almost like a blues record.
