Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” (Matt. 8:23-27)
Most of the time, life isn’t a smooth sail. There are turbulences encountered along the way. But it is during those times that we are directed to entrust our cruise to the man who has the power to still the water. By doing so, we are assured of a safe and peaceful journey. Listen to this song over and over again to get more encouragement and hope when faced with life’s storms.
About the Song and Its Writer
Gene MacLellan composed the words and music of the gospel “Put Your Hand in the Hand.” Originally, the song was written for Anne Murray who inspired Mac Lellan’s songwriting career. The two met at CBC Halifax where MacLellan used to perform with the “Singalong Jubilee.” Unfortunately, the song wasn’t released as a single for Murray. The song took its turn the following year when the Canadian quintet Ocean recorded it. On March 7, 1971, their version entered the Billboard’s Hot Top 100 chart peaking at No. 87. Then, it skyrocketed to No. 2. Its album, which sold over two million copies, became No. 1 in Canada and No. 2 in the USA.
Moreover, SOCAN declared “Put Your Hand in the Hand” as a Canadian classic and is a standard in any gospel repertoire. More than 100 different artists in 25 countries recorded the song. Among the celebrated artists who covered it were Elvis Presley, Joan Baez, Rita Marley, The Platters, Ray Conniff, Donny Hathaway, Engelbert Humperdink, and Loretta Lynn.
In 1987, McLellan received PRO Canada’s William Harold Moon Award for international achievement. Many considered him to be the unsung hero of Canadian music. He was inducted posthumously into the Canadian Country Music Associations Hall of Honour in 1995. In addition, the East Coast Music Association awarded him the Helen Creighton Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996.
