In one of our previous articles here on Country Thang Daily, we’ve featured the hymn “’Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus.” There, we discussed the sweetness that emanates from Christ’s name. And certainly, such hymn taught us to call upon His name more and more each day. Today’s story features another hymn, this time, it’s all about the power that comes with the name of Jesus. That hymn is called “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name.”
A Moving Story Related to the Hymn
Amos Wells penned a story that displays much relevance with the hymn. It’s the story of Rev. E.P. Scott who was a missionary in India. Rev. Scott saw a strange-looking man on the street one day and got curious about him. He later learned that he belonged to a wild mountain tribe whose members have never heard of Christ and His words. The preacher prayed over the matter and soon decided to pay a visit to that community. Some of the tribe’s members captured Scott the moment he arrived at their mountain area. Their sharp-pointed spears were directed at his heart. Immediately, he grabbed his violin and started playing and singing in the native language, “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name.”
He closed his eyes as he expected to be killed any time. Nothing happened until he’s almost finished with the hymn. Slowly, he opened his eyes and was stunned with what he saw. The fierce tribe members dropped their spears and in their eyes were big tears. The next thing that happened is truly an amazing work of Christ. The people invited Rev. Scott to their homes. For two and a half years, the preacher was with the tribe and led many of them to Christ.
Additional Facts of the Song
After a couple of cross-referencing, experts have identified Rev. Edward Perronet (1721-1792) as the hymn’s main author. Over the years, several authors have made changes to the hymn’s text and tune. These variations became visible in different publications. The hymn was set to three tunes. These are the Miles Lane, Coronation, and Diadem.
