We have covered songs about lovers, family, patriotism and even just about having a good time. It is about time to feature a theme song on friends and friendship. Hence, here is another classic written and recorded by Dan Seals himself.

It is a Single released in 1987 and it topped the charts of both the US Hot Country Songs Billboard and Canadian RPM Country Tracks. Enjoy!

Done watching? How was it? Me? I loved it from start to finish. I say it is one of the best songs ever written in my lifetime. The message is universal and it highlights that one essential need of every human being: a true friend.

SONG ANATOMY

Still reading? Why thank you. I’m a lover of meaningful lines, so if you decided to keep reading, join me then in my deconstruction of the lyrics.

I always thought you were the best/I guess I always will/I always felt that we were blessed,
And I feel that way, still.

  1. Everybody needs someone they could trust. And a real friend should be that person. Likewise, that real friend is the only one who would constantly believe and trust in you.

Sometimes we took the hard road,
But we always saw it through.
If I had only one friend left,
I’d want it to be you.

2. Only a real friend would stick with you no matter how tough the situations are. They would even stay put even when times and things are dormant.

Sometimes the world was on our side;/ Sometimes it wasn’t fair/ Sometimes it gave a helping hand/Sometimes we didn’t care.
‘Cause when we were together,
It made the dream come true.
If I had only one friend left,
I’d want it to be you.

3. Being best friends, you are insiders and first-hand witnesses of each other’s lives. You share in all joys and tears, failures and success, bitter and sweet moments.

Someone who understands me,
And knows me inside out/And helps keep me together/And believes without a doubt,
That I could move a mountain:
Someone to tell it to.
If I had only one friend left,
I’d want it to be you.

4. One of the best pleasures in life is when you have someone who values you enough to care how you think and feel. Despite that, he or she will not use that knowledge against you. Rather, they will make it their role to protect you and to give counsel whenever you need to be put on track. As for the rest, they will be your number one fan and cheerleader.

‘Cause when we were together,
It made the dream come true.
If I had only one friend left,
I’d want it to be you
.

Bet we would not appreciate this song had we not experienced being used, burned out and used by so-called fair-weather friends. No, I will not go on a rant here. It’s pointless to do so. I just want to point out that if we are to gauge the commitment of those who will befriend us, look no further and just listen to One Friend.
