A Reunited Father And A Son in “Oklahoma” By Billy Gilman 1

Besides “One Voice” another tear-jerking hit “Oklahoma” from former country singer young star. The song portrays a reunited father and a son in Oklahoma. It is truly can melt your hearts with the lyrics and harmony blended in the sweet voice of Gilman.

The Song…

“Oklahoma” is a song written by D. Vincent Williams and John Allen. It was recorded and released by Gilman in 2000 under his album “One Voice”. Additionally, the anthem reached No. 33 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart and No. 63 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album and the single was certified two-times multi-platinum in the United States.

The Story…

The story is about a boy reuniting with his birth father after somehow losing his mother and being put into foster care, after which he has shuffled around until his father was discovered.

The Lyrics…

Suitcase packed with all his things
Car pulls up, the doorbell rings
He don’t want to go
He thought he’d found his home
But with circumstances he can’t change
Waves goodbye as they pull away
From the life he’s known
For the last seven months or so

She said we found the man who looks like you
Who cried and said he never knew
About the boy in pictures that we showed him
A rambler in his younger days
He knew he made a few mistakes
But he swore he would have been there
Had he known it
Son we think we found your dad in Oklahoma

A million thoughts raced through his mind
What’s his name, what’s he like and will be be
Anything like the man in his dreams
She could see the questions in his eyes
Whispered “don’t be scared my child
I’ll let you know, what we know

And Goes…

About the man we found, he looks like you
And cried and said he never knew
About the boy in pictures that we showed him
A rambler in his younger days He knew he’d made a few mistakes
But he swore he would’ve been there Had he known it
You always said that this was something that you wanted
Son it’s time to meet your Dad in Oklahoma

One last turn he held his breath
‘Til they reached the fifth house on the left
And all at once the tears came rolling in
And as they pulled into the drive
A man was waiting there outside
Who wiped the worry from his eyes Smiled and took his hand

And he said I’m the man who looks like you
Who cried because I never knew
About that boy in pictures that they showed me
A rambler in my younger days I knew I made a few mistakes
But I swear I would have been there had I known it
Never again will you ever be alone
Son welcome to your home in Oklahoma

The Music Video…

The first part of the video shows Gilman singing on the window. And on the other side of the world, there’s another boy in a different home, a foster house, and a foster family. The boy was crying because he needs to pack his things and leave the house he had grown up.

Then he left the house, said goodbyes to the family he thought home. Riding in a cab, wandered on an airplane, he traveled to meet his birth father. In the video, a father longing for a child can be seen, a father who had established another family, eager to meet his son, whom he abandoned before.

Moreover, the father and the longing son met and reunited. Little did we know, at the very end of the video, Gilman was his half-brother. The father and the wife welcomed the boy wholeheartedly. Gilman then offered his bicycle to his brother. Finally, a family has been pictured at the completion of the music video.
