We’ve got a new album to add to our valued collections fellas. Check this out!

The Oak Ridge Boys released their Lightning Rod Records new project 17th Avenue Revival on March 18. To remember, they are Country Music Hall of Fame members, Grand Ole Opry members, and five-time GRAMMY-winning group. This is under the production of the legendary Dave Cobb. This is the group’s second project with the popular producer after The Boys Are Back album in 2009. For the new album, Cobb wanted the group to revisit their gospel music roots, taking influence from the early days of rock ‘n’ roll and spiritual, African-American gospel music. Also under Cobb’s direction, during the band’s recording of the album, there was no vocal stacking and very few overdubs. Cobb is also known for his work with Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, and Brandi Carlile.

17th Avenue Revival brings The Oak Ridge Boys back to their gospel roots, but with an edge. Somewhat retro, yet new and fresh at the same time, there was no vocal stacking and very few overdubs. For two of the songs, the Boys gathered around one microphone and let the harmonies shine, just as Dave Cobb had planned initially.

The tracks feature a bouncy rhythm, simple, airy acoustic guitar, country instrumentation and twangy bluegrass vocals, which are especially moving and magical when the whole band joins in.

Since the start of their highly decorated career, the Oaks have achieved five GRAMMY® Awards, and multiple CMA, ACM and Dove Awards for their crossover brand of pop, country and gospel music that spans multiple generations.

The Oak Ridge Boys overview

One of the longest-running groups in country music, the started life as a gospel quartet before gradually modernizing their style and moving into secular country-pop. Yet even at the height of their popularity in the late ’70s and early ’80s — when they were big enough to cross over to the pop charts — their sound always remained deeply rooted in country gospel harmony.

Their existence dates all the way back to World War II, circa 1942-1943, when a Knoxville, Tennessee group began performing gospel songs in nearby Oak Ridge, the home of an atomic bomb research facility. The group’s members also performed in a larger aggregation called Wally Fowler & the Georgia Clodhoppers, which recorded for Capitol. However, lead singer Fowler decided to focus on gospel music in 1945. Dubbed the Oak Ridge Quartet, the group first appeared at the Grand Ole Opry that year and made their first recordings in 1947 with a lineup of Fowler, Lon “Deacon” Freeman, Curly Kinsey, and Johnny New.

The Oak Ridge Boys are hitting the Big Apple this week where the quartet will make appearances on Good Day NY, Varney & Company, Access Hollywood, PBS’s METRO FOCUS, Fox & Friends, IMUS in the Morning, SiriusXM, and much more!
