No Fences: Garth Brooks’ First Platinum Hit

Back on November 30, 1990, Garth Brooks made history in his career when his album, No Fences reached double platinum status. It was the first successful and multi-platinum certifications for the talented country artist.

No Fences was Brooks’ second studio album. Brooks and his team worked on the album from 1989 to 1990 and recorded at Jack’s Tracks Recording Studio in Nashville. It was then released on August 27, 1990, with Allen Reynolds as the producer. A total of five singles were released from the said album, and these were: Wild Horses (November 2000), The Thunder Rolls (April 1991), Two of a Kind, Workin’ on a Full House (January 1991), Unanswered Prayers (October 1990), and Friends in Low Places (August 1990). The Thunder Rolls was awarded Video of the Year by CMA in 1991, while Friends in Low Places bagged Academy of Country Music’s Single of the Year that same year.

During the album’s initial week upon its release, it immediately reached the number 1 spot on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart. On the Billboard 200, No Fences reached the third spot, then remained in the top 40 for a total of over 126 weeks. It was such a successful hit that it gained massive popularity in other countries as well. It became the number one album on the British country music charts, paving the way for Garth Brooks to earn his first-ever gold album outside of the U.S. His album remained in the British country charts for over five years.

In 1990, the Academy of Country Music named it the Album of the Year.

After selling over 17 million copies, Brooks earned international stardom status and was in an all-new high. To date, New Fences also happens to be Garth Brooks’ first album to have a friendly combination of country and pop—a definite breakout from his prior album’s neotraditional country sound.

Presently, Garth Brooks already has a long line of successful tours, albums, and awards. He has proven himself time and time again as an artist with real, overwhelming gift and passion for all things country music.
