Neil McCoy Had the Most Precious “Wink” in 1994 3

What’s With The Wink?

That was perhaps the most precious wink that American country singer Neil McCoy has ever had back in 1994. We’ll discuss more of that wink as used in the song later. For now, let’s talk about “Wink” as McCoy’s second Number One hit in a row. It was released as the singer’s second single on his album No Doubt About It. The song was preceded by the album’s title track “No Doubt About It” making it McCoy’s first chart-topper single from the said album. “Wink” occupied the topmost spot of Hot Country Songs chart for four weeks. Apart from its popularity in the US, the song did top as well the Canada Country Tracks chart. Acquiring favorable airplay, the song obtained a Robert J. Burton Award conferred by the Broadcast Music Incorporated in 1996.

The Magical Wink

Written by Bob DiPiero and Tom Shapiro, the wordings of the song narrate the magical effect of a woman’s wink to her lover. Each stanza contains lines telling the man’s plights and how these were cured by just a blink of an eye. In the chorus, he emphasizes how such wink works on him. Whenever a trouble-hit him, he doesn’t need to overly think about it. Not even a hard drink would help him get through it. But, he’s sold on to her lover’s wink. For him, everything turns to be alright in just a blink of her eye. Ironically though, the song’s music video employed a theme that’s quite the opposite of the text’s subject matter. Here, the singer performs the song at an event and tries to get his lover to wink but the latter refuses.

So folks, what do you think had probably made the song the most-performed hit in the mid-90s? Would we be happy to hear your thoughts?
