We have seen quite a number of veterans or uninformed disciples of this country to break on a country song or just randomly strum their guitar strings but this Navy Veteran Sailor who calls herself Sailor Jerri on her Youtube account has something to say about the hardships that veterans embark on when they are sent to war. She even rewrote the lyrics to Hallelujah to make a poignant message.
Sailor Jerri, Hallelujah Veterans Version
Hallelujah is arguably, if not the most covered song in the collection of Gospel songs. This Leonard Cohen song definitely gives an anthem to those who praise the creator above. It has been sung by many artists and groups like Pentatonix.
Recently, Sailor Jerri of Youtube recreated the song’s lyrics that reflect the crests and troughs of veteran life. Some might say that the lyrics could be a little bit sentimental but it did have a beautiful impact on many veterans who left a comment to Sailor Jerri and her rendition of Hallelujah. Many even requested for Sailor Jerri to put it on iTunes or Spotify.
Watch her actual recording below and tell us what you think:
“Hallelujah Veterans Version” Lyrics
You packed your bags and shut the door
You crossed the sea to fight a war
You didn’t know just what would happen to ya?
Stepped in the dirt, boots on the ground
And gunfire was the only sound
And to yourself you whispered Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Everyday and Every night
You walk the walk, you fight the fight
You never saw the end in sight now did ya?
The days awash in a haze of red
The blood, the mud, too many dead
Your weary soul was crying, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Too late to help, you hear a shot
You know you’re in a deadly spot
You never thought this day would come now did ya?
Your brother falls down to the ground
The enemy is all around
From your lips you scream a Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
You fought the fight till it was done
You have the strength to carry on
You thought it’d be much better back home did ya?
You try each day, keep pushing through
But the battle lives inside of you
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
