Mo Pitney conveys how amazing he felt about meeting country legend Merle Haggard in his new hit song “I Met Merle Haggard Today.”

Released in 2016 as part of his album Behind This Guitar, the song has become one of Mo Pitney’s greatest hits. Although it didn’t land on any musical charts, it has become a fan favorite because it truly shows Pitney’s love for country music.

His raspy voice, complimented by the upbeat strumming of his guitar, gives off that old country vibe that makes it very nostalgic. But besides its catchy tune and Pitney’s amazing voice, fans got hooked on the lyrics and their meaning.

So, let us dive into Mo Pitney’s timeless wisdom and discover the meaning behind his hit song “I Met Merle Haggard Today.”

Meaning Behind the Song

Like most of us, famous artists also have people they admire. They keep us inspired to keep going. Merle Haggard was that to Mo Pitney, and he wanted to cement his memory of meeting the legendary outlaw in his new hit song, “I Met Merle Haggard Today.”

The song simply talks about Mo Pitney’s first encounter with Haggard on February 4, 2013, at the “Marty Stuart Show.” It starts with him saying how he was having a normal day and how his buddy called him to watch the Marty Stuart Show, and never in his wildest dreams would he actually meet Merle Haggard at the back door down in NorthStar studios at exactly 4:45 pm.

At that time, his mind was clouded by excitement, not knowing what to do. Is he going to take a picture with his phone? Or will he just record his idol singing, “Pleasure to meet you, Mo.” But at the end of the song, Pitney has only one thing to say: that he is glad he met Merle Haggard today.

So, if you want to check out Mo Pitney’s talent in composing unique and catchy songs, you can watch his live acoustic performance of “I Met Merle Haggard Today” below.
