Michael Barry Reid or professionally known as Mike Reid was born on May 24, 1947. Yep, you read it right. He is celebrating his 71st birthday today. And to honor his natal day, let’s get to know more about him. While Reid’s name may not be very popular on the country music scene now, he was once. In fact, his career was so rich and it’s interesting to write some of his fascinating accomplishments both in sports and in country music.
While attending college at the Pennsylvania State University, Reid played football and served as the defensive lineman for the Penn State Nittany Lions Football league. He spent five seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals in the NFL and retired after the 1974 season. While he’s soaring high in the field of sports, Reid also played music with local bands. It is during those times that he met Larry Gatlin and he was inspired by his music. Hence, after undergoing a knee surgery in 1975, Reid left football and pursued a music career.
His Stint in the Music Industry
Reid started performing with the Apple Butter Band before he began writing songs. As a songwriter, he drew inspiration from Leonard Cohen and Randy Newman. In 1978, Jerry Jeff Walker recorded one of his songs and that motivated him to follow a solo career. But, before his success as a solo artist materialized, he first reaped success in songwriting. In particular, he wrote a song that became a No. 1 hit for Ronnie Milsap entitled “Stranger in My House.” Moreover, other artists who enjoyed success with Reid’s songs include Mark Gray, Marie Osmond, Tanya Tucker, and Conway Twitty.
All in all, Reid penned 11 number one singles. In 1990, he eventually began recording songs with Columbia records. He released his debut album entitled Returning for Home from which his No. 1 hit “Walk on Faith” came from. More success follows him in 1992 when he began writing songs that became major hits for Collin Raye.
To celebrate Reid’s birthday, here’s a No. 1 hit of his to delight our ears and hearts.
