Have you ever met those who
Keep humming when the song’s through?
It’s like
They’re living life to a whole different tune
And have you ever met those that
Keep hoping when it’s hopeless
It’s like
They figured out what the rest haven’t yet

The second when you realize
What you have inside
It’s only just a matter of time
‘Til you…

Grace Got You” is one of the singles released by the American contemporary Christian music band MercyMe in 2017. It is one of the tracks included in the band’s 2017 album Lifer, which was released on March 31, 2017.

MercyMe has been active as a band performing around the country especially in their state, Texas, as early as the 1990s. They have focused on singing and producing Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) and has been one of the most popular bands to have introduced themselves as a CCM band. As a matter of fact, one of their songs, “I Can Only Imagine” or just simply called “Imagine“, has sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling Christian single of all time. Hence, it was certified platinum by the RIAA. In addition, no other Christian song has achieved such milestone.

On the other hand, “Grace Got You” is another reflection at the same time of a revelation song. It features the vocals of John Reuben, a dear friend of the band. As a listener, it makes us realize some life questions commonly asked by people. It gives us the idea of what life could have been without God. It’s very simple in its sense but it reveals the truest form and nature of human life — Faith, Love, and Hope.

Just after the release of the single and the album, MercyMe’s lead vocalist Bart Millard shared the story behind the gospel tune. In an interview, he elaborately explained:

“Grace Got You’ is just a song that makes me smile. The whole idea that once you realize that God’s grace has you…no matter what comes your way, you can live your life as if you’ve already read the last page of the book and know how the whole thing turns out. Our eternity is set! On your worst day, Christ is OK with you. He adores you. He’s pleased with you. How is that possible? No clue, but it is. That’s the most amazing news of all! When we originally made the album, we wanted to have someone rap, but we didn’t know who we were going to get. Our paths crossed with a guy who used to be on Gotee Records named John Reuben – who we had done stuff early on with when we were all new together – and we asked him if he’d come out of retirement to rap on the song.  It turned out so fun, and totally matched the vibe of the song.”
