Before the version of Kenny Rogers and Dottie West became popular in 1979, the original Tammy Wynette’s performance came first into the limelight.

First recorded and penned by American country music artist Tammy Wynette, ‘Til I Can Make It On My Own was released in January 1976. It was co-written by George Richey and Billy Sherrill.

The song was Tammy Wynette’s fifteenth number one on the country charts. The single stayed at number one for one week and spent a total of eleven weeks on the country charts.

Wynette noted on multiple occasions that the song was her personal favorite of all that she had written or recorded, and it would remain a staple of her concerts for the remainder of her career.

Artist Renditions

There are a number of artists who have made this song even more popular. With their distinct versions and musicality, it is undeniable they sang the song as if it were their own.

In July 1979, Kenny Rogers and Dottie West released their own version. Their rendition made it to number 3 on the country charts. It was also covered by Billy Gilman on his album One Voice in 2000. In addition, Martina McBride recorded her rendition of the song on her album Timeless in 2005.

Moreover, Lulu Roman released a cover of the song on her 2013 album At Last. She featured Georgette Jones, daughter of Tammy Wynette and George Jones, on harmony vocals. Georgette then released an album with this as the title track in 2013.
