Make Sure to “Check Yes or No” by George Strait

“Check Yes or No” is a song composed by Danny Wells and Dana Hunt Black. Recorded by George Strait, it was released in September 1995. The single is the lead from the American country music singer’s box set Strait Out of the Box. On both the US Billboard country and the Canadian RPM country charts, it peaked at the top spot. In 1996, it was included as a bonus track on the UK released version of the Blue Clear Sky album.

Sitting at the top for four weeks,

“Check Yes or No” tells a story about a bond between two people who have been together since childhood.

Popularized by one of country music’s finest, it is part of numerous albums. First is in Strait out of the Box. The second is For the Last Time. Third and fourth, respectively, is found in 50 Number Ones and Best Of. Last but not the least, it also is part of 2011 The Cowboy Rides Away: Live from AT&T Stadium. In 1996, they chose it as the CMA Single of the Year. This was a huge breakthrough for both George Strait and songwriters Dana Hunt Black and Danny Wells.

“Check Yes or No” defines what a classic country song is. Incorporated in its lyrics are many stereotypes. One, people associated with country music as well as many things that the audience of country music can relate to. The second is the stereotype of marrying your high school or third-grade sweetheart. It is one that many small town people have experienced firsthand or know many people who have done so. Because of the song’s great connection to the audience, it is the main reason as to why it was and still is, so successful.

For the many classics and by simply ‘keeping it country’, we admire George Strait. This great respect intensified especially with one of his greatest singles, “Check Yes or No”.

The Music Video

The music video for the song featured actor/singer/songwriter Michael Ray Ryan as the main character. Playing her leading lady was Dawn Waggoner (the real-life founder of the Texas Bikini Team).
