The song “I’m That Kind of Girl” is one of the best tracks that Patty Loveless ever recorded. Songwriters Ronnie Samoset and Matraca Berg, the brains behind Loveless’s 2003 single titled “On Your Way Home,” also wrote this classic hit. It got released as the third single from Loveless’s On Down the Line album in January 1991.

The song managed to enter the Billboard Hot Country Singles and Tracks chart with ease, reaching the number-five spot during the week of March 30, 1991. The song stayed on the charts for an impressive twenty weeks in total.

Unlike other Patty Loveless top songs, the singer deviated from her usual soft bluegrass melody with this song. Instead, she showed a fiercer side of herself, giving the song a more empowered vibe.

At its core, Patty Loveless‘s “I’m That Kind of Girl” is a song about women’s empowerment. It focuses on making people understand that men shouldn’t treat women as toys. Instead, they must give them the true romance they deserve and seek. They should never take them for granted too.

The song is also a reminder that despite all the occasional one-night stands, people still look for that special spark in all their relationships. It says that at the end of the day, all of us still seek one thing: a long-lasting relationship.

We all seek that one special connection. Be it from unconditional familial love, a loyal friend, and of course, a soulmate.

While it is sad that she’s an underrated artist, Patty Loveless’s “I’m That Kind of Girl” proves she’s one of the best breakout artists of the 90s. If you’ve never heard of the song before, you can listen to it now by clicking here.
