‘Tis almost 5 years since the passing of one of the great country music legends of all time. Yes, behind the tune of He Stopped Loving Her Today, When The Grass Grows Over Me, The Grand Tour, and She Thinks I Still Care, George Jones was one genius musician. And no one can deny that.

George Jones wasn’t just a country superstar. He was an icon who truly lived the American dream.

The Possum was laid to rest at the Grand Ole Opry House and will be greatly missed. George Jones passed away on April 26, 2013, at the age of 81.

During the funeral of Jones, some of the most famous names in the country music industry joined and paid tribute to the icon. Among them are Patty Loveless and Vince Gill, whose tribute was an emotional one.

Loveless, Gill Tribute: “Go Rest High On That Mountain”

Singing their hearts out, emotional Patty Loveless and Vince Gill gave the most heartfelt performance of the song “Go Rest High on That Mountain.” At points in the song, Vince is so overcome with emotion, and Patty has to take over.

As seen in the audience, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood were moved to their feet for Vince & Patty’s emotional tribute, while others are seen crying into their tissues.

Vince Gill considers George Jones more than a country artist. He is his great friend, brother, and an idol.

This performance is one of the most emotional tributes. One cannot stand but to shed a tear. This performance dedicated to the ultimate country singer is wonderful beyond words.

Simply Emotional. Patty Loveless and Vince Gill perform the most heartfelt “Go Rest High On That Mountain” at George Jones Funeral.

George Jones: A Country Legend

Born into a poor family at the start of the Great Depression, Jones took to singing on the streets for money as a child and then started to record country music in his 20’s. He was inducted as a Grand Ole Opry performer after writing his first hit in 1955 and the rest was history. He lived a long, prosperous life, but when Jones passed away at age 81 in April 2013, it hit the country music community very hard.

For his funeral, it was only fitting to hold it at Jones’ home away from how, the Grand Ole Opry. Thousands flocked to Nashville for his funeral and many country stars took the stage to remember their idol. Country superstar Vince Gill had a close relationship with Jones, who lovingly called him “Sweetpea”. Gill told Jones’ funeral attendees that he hated the nickname at first, but it grew on him, since every time he heard it, he knew the person loved George Jones.
