"I Love This Bar": A Song That Inspired Toby Keith's Chain of Restaurants 1

Who would’ve thought a song can inspire its own singer into starting up a business? Yes, it’s true. Because of this song, a chain of restaurants was created.

I Love This Bar is a song co-written and recorded by American country music artist Toby Keith. Released in August 2003, this song became his lead off single from his album Shock ‘n Y’all. In addition, it became a Number One hit on the Billboard US Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart, keeping the top spot for five weeks. Keith wrote the song with Scotty Emerick.

I Love This Bar

From the title of the song alone, the narrator describes his favorite bar and the people who frequently go to that place.

Right off the bat, Toby depicts the conditions of the clients of the bar. Apparently, it is assumed that these people come from all walks of life.

We got winners, we got losers
Chain smokers and boozers
And we got yuppies, we got bikers
We got thirsty hitchhikers
And the girls next door dress up like movie stars

Toby loves this particular establishment. Everyone has a favorite spot they call their own and this one is his! He can relate to the atmosphere and the people. As soon as he walks through the entrance he feels happy and wants others to experience the happiness he feels from this bar.

I love this bar
It’s my kind of place
Just walkin’ through the front door
Puts a big smile on my face
It ain’t too far, come as you are
Hmm, hmm, hmm I love this bar

Blue Collar mainly refers to manual laborers that had to wear clothing that was more difficult to get dirty. In contrast with white collar workers, they could wear white shirts and not look dirty. The term rednecks most probably come from the sunburns that manual laborers in the fields would get on their necks after working out in the sun all day.

I’ve seen short skirts, we got high-techs
Blue-collar boys and rednecks
And we got lovers, lots of lookers
I’ve even seen dancing girls and hookers
we like to drink our beer from a mason jar

Moreover, mason jars are a staple of the south. When not being used to serve beer at a bar like this, you can see them being used to store or to drink moonshine.

The song was really an epitome of how most country people live their lives — wake up, work, rest, go to a bar, and have fun. And the cycle continues.

Most noteworthy, Ray Waddell of Billboard magazine reviewed the song favorably calling it a “beer-joint staple for years to come.”

Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill

Because of the song, a chain of restaurants owned by Toby Keith called “Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar” came into existence. This restaurant chain is found in three different areas in the state of Oklahoma.

Especially relevant, the restaurant’s tagline is “You’re Gonna Love This Bar and Grill”. Moreover, it talks about everything about the place which is bigger and badder, just like the Big Dog Daddy himself, Toby Keith.

Furthermore, the menu reflects the same bigger & badder attitude. There’s nothing fancy, but lots of down-home favorites that are well-prepared and served by the friendly and efficient staff.
