Lonestar‘s “Amazed” is absolutely among the most romantic country songs of all time; no wonder why it has become one of the most requested songs during weddings.
It was released in 1999 off the band’s third studio album Lonely Grill. The song quickly hit the No. 1 spot on Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks and maintained that position for eight consecutive weeks, making it the band’s longest-lasting No. 1 single and biggest hit.
Before 1999 came to an end, a remix of “Amazed” was released for pop radio. That version also reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 while peaking at No. 2 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks charts. It made Lonestar the first country band to hold a position in the Top 10 of the Hot 100 year-end countdowns.
The Story Behind a Romantic Song
Written by Marv Green, Aimee Mayo, and Chris Lindsey, “Amazed” tells the tale of a man head over heels in love with his woman. He is blown away by her love, the little things she does, and even just by the smell of her skin.
“I don’t know how you do what you do. I’m so in love with you. It just keeps getting better. I want to spend the rest of my life with you by my side. Forever and ever. Every little thing that you do. Baby, I’m amazed by you,” the song goes.
Songwriters Aimee Mayo and Chris Lindsey are a married couple, and they were in the early stages of their relationship when they wrote the song with their friend and songwriting partner, Marv Green. Mayo and Lindsey drew upon their budding romance for inspiration. Mayo explained, “Our feelings for each other just started coming out as we were writing.”
“Amazed” is also the first country No. 1 hit for the couple.
Thirteen years later, Lonestar lead singer Richie McDonald told Songfacts that “Amazed” is still one of the songs he loves to perform.
“Artists wait for a song like that to come along that can take their career to another level, and that song did that for Lonestar, and that’s something that we’ll never forget,” McDonald revealed to Songfacts. “And it’s not just the impact that it had on our careers, but the impact that it has on the fans. I mean, ten years later, it still has the same effect. That song to me is just a classic, timeless song. And it is that song that took Lonestar to another level.”
McDonald went on expressing that the band will never get tired of playing such a classic and timeless song. After all, fans are still coming up to them night after night telling them, “that’s the song they got married to, the song they use on their anniversary. That’s what music is supposed to be about: if you can get in touch with people’s emotions, you can become a part of their story, as well. We’ve made an impact on people’s lives, and that means more than anything to us,” McDonald said.
