Life’s railway to heaven is oftentimes referred to as the road less traveled. Yes, that’s one big irony of life. Why so? Don’t many people want to go to heaven after death? Perhaps many, if not all, of us want to. However, most of the time, we choose to take the wrong road. The road to destruction appears so bright, wide, and easy to tread on. Humans as we are, we easily get enticed to these superficial sights. Hence, we instantly throw ourselves to this path only to feel regretful in the end.

But thanks to those few whose faith in God remained steadfast and never get tired of being led by Him. They are those who are likewise willing to inspire others to follow their steps and lend a hand to ensure that everybody is headed in one direction – heaven. From this premise, perhaps, was where Eliza R. Snow and M.E. Abbey took their inspiration in writing the song “Life’s Railway to Heaven.” Writing a song that encourages everyone to take that less traveled road such that all would have the chance to experience the heaven’s bright shore is truly a noble act. Without them, we may not be able to enjoy singing such a beautiful song. Furthermore, with the song’s enlightening and inspiring message, many of us are still wandering on that road leading to nowhere.

Given the song’s wonderful message, and considering our love toward God as one of country music’s theme, it’s no wonder why many country legends loved recording the song. Among them were Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, and Merle Haggard. In the video below, we’ll see another country music artist, the late Boxcar Willie, performing the song live.

The Unseen Beauty of the Less Traveled Road

Because we fail to look beyond the unattractiveness of the railway to heave, we also missed seeing its hidden beauty. Such beauty is something that would last forever, something that we could enjoy if we only allow God to lead us to it. This was clearly stated in the refrain,

Blessed Savior, Thou wilt guide us

Till we reach the blissful shore,

Where the angels wait to join us

In Thy praise forevermore.
