With her soulful and angelic vocals, it’s not surprising that the bluegrass/country music singer Alison Krauss is able to turn any song into a hit. In her recent album, Windy City, she delivered a stunning performance of a Roger Miller classic song. Prior to this, the multiple Grammy Award recipient brought a popular song of the late ‘60s to country music audience. That’s what she did exactly in her 1995 cover of “Baby, Now That I Found You.” There were several artists who covered the single before and after her. But, Krauss’ version can be considered as the most successful despite its failure to crack the country chart’s Top 40. Peaking at No. 49, the song earned the singer one of the Grammy Awards she currently holds. In particular, she won the Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for “Baby, Now That I Found You.”
In addition, the single’s album, Now That I Found You: A Collection obtained double platinum certification from RIAA for reaching over two million copies sold. On the other hand, her other country hit “When You Say Nothing At All,” also featured on the said album was named Single of the Year by the Country Music Association. Those accolades are concrete proofs of the competitiveness of country music genre in producing successful song covers.
It was the British soul band, The Foundations, who first made “Baby, Now That I Found You” popular in 1967. Written by Tony Macaulay and John MacLeod, the song was released as the band’s debut single. Shortly after, it became No. 1 in the UK and Canada while it ranked No. 11 in the US. Their recording appeared on the soundtrack to the film Shallow Hal. While the band did not last for long, its original lead singer, Clem Curtis, recorded the song twice in the late ‘80s.
