Kevin Sharp is one of the country singers that put so much emotion into his songs. His strong yet smooth tone of voice matches every hit of his own. Gone but never be forgotten, let’s go ahead and remember Sharp with his rendition of the track “Nobody Knows”.
The song was Sharp’s No.1 hit on Billboard. It stayed for four weeks. Unfortunately, it is the only No.1 track that Sharp sang. Regardless, “Nobody Knows” made him famous and his signature song.
Originally, the song was a hit by the R&B artist Tony Rich from his 1996 album “Words”. Nevertheless, the country version was loved my country music enthusiast.
In addition, Sharp was born in Redding, California on December 10, 1970. At the age of seven, his family decided to move to Weiser, Idaho to have a better living. Since then, he performed musicals in high school and stayed active in music.
Beginning in 1989, when he was still in high school, Sharp began, most of the time, experiencing dizziness and fatigue. As a high school senior, he was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. The cancer had already spread out to his lungs and he was given a little chance for a recovery.
Due to his illness, his family seeks help to Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. There he met the record producer, David Foster, who helped him boost his music career. After two years of chemotherapy and radiation treatment, Sharp’s cancer went into diminution, although he permanently lost all of his hair.
Sharp worked at Great America in California after diminution. While working, he sent a demo tape to David Foster who introduced Sharp to A&R Representatives then signed a contract to Asylum Records. The company that presented him to fame.
His very first album “Measure Of A Man” was released in September 1996 which includes his single “Nobody Knows”. It topped and spent four weeks the Billboard Hot Country Singles and Tracks. Furthermore, he was named “New Touring Artist of the Year” by the Country Music Association and nominated for “Top New Male Vocalist” award by the Academy of Country Music.
While at the backstage of TNN Music City News Country Awards in 1998, Sharp collapsed. He was rushed to the hospital for an emergency surgery due to problems with steel rods in his hip. As a result, Sharp needed to cancel tour and concert schedules.
“Measure Of A Man” formed two more top 10 country singles which are “She’s Sure Taking It Well” and “If You Love Somebody”. However, Sharp’s fourth album single “There’s Only You”, only peaked at No. 43. Sharp’s second album “Love Is” was released in 1998 on Elektra/Asylum, failed to produce any successful singles, and Sharp was eventually plunged from Asylum’s roster.
His third album “Make a Wish” was released on the independent Cupit Records label in 2005, although none of its four singles charted.
Kevin Sharp continued to perform as a musician and a motivational speaker as well. He was a spokesperson for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Sharp wrote a book “Tragedy’s Gift” and was published in 2004.
Unfortunately, Kevin Sharp died at the age of 43 on April 19, 2014, due to complications from cancer treatment specifically from past stomach surgeries and digestive issues.
The “Nobody Knows” star may be gone but through his songs, he will always be remembered.
