Having a voice that can be categorized with the baritone tunes of Scotty McReery, Josh Turner, and Chris Young, Kane Brown is another contemporary country singer to look forward to. This young man coming fresh from Tennessee was initially attracted to R&B, but decided to focus on Country after winning a contest with his version of Chris Young’s “Getting’ You Home (The Black Dress Song).” This success inspired him to record his covers of songs by Brantley Gilbert, Alan Jackso, and other country artists. His videos quickly established loyal followers. This helped his first single “Don’t Go City on Me,” immediately go viral.

In 2017, Kane’s name got further recognition. His single, “What Ifs” exerted an impressive position on the chart. This song features his school friend Lauren Alaina, who became popular in American Idol, season 10. In October 2017, the single put an end to Sam Hunt’s record-breaking 34-week reign on Hot Country Songs for “Body Like a Back Road.”  “What Ifs” also dominated the Country Airplay and Country Streaming Songs charts, making it the first number one for both Brown and Alaina.

The promising chart performance and records sale of the song gained it a Platinum certification from RIAA on October 2, 2017. It holds the record as the third most-consumed country song of 2017. Also, it has sold over 800,000 copies in the US as of July 2018.

What Ifs, and its content

Brown co-wrote the song with Matthew McGinn and Jordan Schmidt. The track centers on the possibilities that could happen in a relationship. The couple gets lost in the landscape of “What Ifs,” as they jam along with the song’s unbound optimism.

What if I just pulled you close, what if I leaned in
And the stars line up and it’s our last first kiss
What if one of these days baby I’d go and change your name
What if I loved all these what ifs away

During the latest ACM Awards, Brown and Alaina set the stage on fire with their all-out performance of “What If’s.” For a moment, the longtime friends, who both have real-life partners, became “lovers” on stage. According to Brown, they just executed what was instructed to them, and turned out to be a memorable number.
