Who could not forget George Jones and Tammy Wynette together? This is one of the most interesting love stories in country music history. These wickedly talented artists produced some of the finest and classic country songs that have been hits on the charts. Although their relationship ended, their duo made an impact in the industry and have inspired many artists. Their lives may have passed here, but their songs will surely be reckoned and always be remembered.

Let us relive George and Tammy’s love story through one of their classic duets, “We’re Gonna Hold On.”

About the Song, Jones & Wynette’s Most Successful Duet

We’re Gonna Hold On” is a duet single of George Jones and Tammy Wynette. Produced by Billy Sherrill, it was released in August 1973. Having a number duets, this song was their most successful. It spent fourteen weeks on the chart. Friends Earl Montgomery and George Jones co-wrote this song. In addition, it was the first no. 1 for Jones since 1967. At that time, Jones and Wynette were still married.

On August 1, 1973, Wynette filed for divorce due to Jones’ increasing bouts of drunkenness. The song was released not long after the couple’s reconciliation.

Like many of their songs, “We’re Gonna Hold On” tended to describe their unstable relationship. In an interview with Music City News in 1973, Jones said,

“I was tired of waking up sick and having people talk about me – having my wife and children mad at me…I just looked at the situation and realized all the pain I was causing and all the pain I was suffering wasn’t worth it. We love each other very much.”

According to Bob Allen, Jone’s biographer, Jones’ love story inspired songwriter Earl Montgomery. Jones suggested the title. While on tour with George and Tammy in Pennsylvania, he had gotten drunk in the lounge of a Holiday Inn where they were staying and had charged all his drinks to Tammy’s room.

Watch and fall in love again with George and Tammy’s performance of “We’re Gonna Hold On.”
