George Jones & “If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again”
One of the most meaningful songs ever recorded by George Jones was the classic song “If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again.” Admittedly, he also considered the tune as one of his favorites. However, he was not the one who wrote it. The song was published in the 1920s. All the credits are given to John Whitfield “Whit” Vaughan who crafted the beautiful poetic tune. Soon, it was then put into song and became a popular part of the gospel genre.
Furthermore, Vaughan penned “If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again” as a tribute to his mother, Clara. To note, he based the lyrics on a text written by James Rowe, an English settler living in Georgia during the early 20th century. In 2007, the United States’ National Recording Preservation Board selected Thomas A. Dorsey’s 1934 recording of the song. It was kept for preservation in the National Recording Registry. In addition, many other artists have rendered their versions since then. In country music, the most notable versions were recorded by Loretta Lynn and, of course, George Jones.
Jones Honors His Mom with the Song
While he was still alive, Jones was very vocal about his love for his mother. Hence, in 2003, he released his version of the song and included it on his album The Gospel Collection. Jones conceived the said album as a result of his lifelong love of gospel music. At the same time, just like the songwriter, Vaughan, Jones dedicated the album to his mother.
In an interview with The 11th Hour Magazine, Jones revealed that his first musical experience was performing in church with his mom. His mom was a devout Christian. Also, she played the piano in their local church. Thus, she always invited Jones with her whenever she had rehearsals.
The relationship of Jones to his mother was incredible. Hence, his version of the song was more of emotional and meaningful. Obviously, we now know from whom Jones got his amazing talent and voice.
