Who Is “Jolene” and Where Did She Come From?

This song was sung by many country stars and, of course, by the creator herself, Miss Dolly Parton. It has seemingly become one of the most well-known songs in country music. It has become one of the staples of The Country Queen and is seen as one of her more iconic songs, not that she is lacking in that department.

The song, specifically the description of Jolene, was surprisingly inspired by a meeting with a fan who was only ten years old. Dolly explains in an interview with NPR:

“She had this beautiful red hair, this beautiful skin, these beautiful green eyes, and she was looking up at me, holding for an autograph, I said, ‘Well, you’re the prettiest little thing I ever saw. So what is your name?’ And she said, ‘Jolene.’ And I said, ‘Jolene. Jolene. Jolene. Jolene. That is pretty. That sounds like a song. I’m going to write a song about that.'”

And indeed, the queen did write a song about that which instantly became a classic. Other than that, Dolly Parton also says the song’s lyrics are based on an incident at her local bank when a bank teller flirted with her husband Carl Dean. This happened when the two were still newly married.

The song itself became number 1 in the U.S Hot Country Songs and was the fifth consecutive number 1 hit for Dolly which greatly helped speed up her career. Currently, “Jolene” is the country star’s most covered song, some notable covers are The White Stripes, Pentatonix, Miley Cyrus, and Ellie Goulding.
