Johnny Cash’s ‘Ring of Fire’ Re-imagined by Home Free and Avi of Pentatonix

Ring of Fire, the Man in Black, and How It Transcended

June Carter Cash and Merle Kilgore are the writers of “Ring of Fire“. Johnny Cash recorded it in 1963, as a single on his ‘Ring of Fire: The Best of Johnny Cash 1963’ album. It peaked at number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles. Sounding worrisome, the term refers to falling in love. The songwriter, June Carter, was experiencing this with Johnny Cash at the time. Some say that Carter had seen the phrase “Love is like a burning ring of fire,” highlighted in one of her Uncle A.P Carter’s Elizabethan books of poetry.

June’s sister, Anita Carter originally recorded the song on her Mercury Records album. After hearing Anita’s rendition, Cash claimed he had a dream where he heard the song supplemented by “Mexican horns”. To Anita he said,

“I’ll give you about five or six more months, and if you don’t hit with it, I’m gonna record it the way I feel it.”

When the song failed to become a big hit for Anita, Cash recorded his version, adding the mariachi-style horns from his dream. Cash noted that adding trumpets was a change to his basic sound. Cash’s daughter, Rosanne, defined that the song is “about the transformative power of love and that’s what it has always meant to her and that’s what it will always mean to the Cash children.”

Ring of Fire in Home Free Plus Avi A Capella

We’re giving you one more cover from them again! Home Free supporters will certainly be super psyched about their cover of Johnny Cash’s ‘Ring of Fire’. It was one of the a Capella group’s signature songs from “The Sing-Off’, a singing competition for a Capella groups. This version, however, features a special guest from Pentatonix, Avi Kaplan. They called their cover both a “fan and band favorite“. Home Free’s Tim Foust opened up about the track saying they had been wanting to collaborate with Avi Kaplan.

Ring of Fire, they said, provided them the perfect avenue.

Indeed, the guys put their own twist on the classic hit. In addition, they perfectly blended as they belt out each note in front of a flaming campfire. Of course, we always expect the best from this incredibly talented group. Adding Avi Kaplan, whose Pentatonix vocal band won Season 3 of ‘The Sing-Off’, the cover came out spectacular.
