Cash Sang About Miracles in ‘He Turned the Water into Wine’

In a Bible passage of John 2:1-11, Jesus performs the miracle also known as changing the water into wine at a wedding banquet after his mother tells him there is not any wine left. The Son of God did not really do anything at first until he follows her wishes by changing the content of six stone water jars with a capacity of 20-30 gallons into wine. The director of the ceremony then tells the bridegroom, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink, but you have saved the best till now.” Hold your horses, this is not a bible post but it is closely related to that bible passage as it was one of the inspirations of Johnny Cash writing the song, ‘He Turned the Water into Wine.’

Johnny Cash, He Turned the Water into Wine

It is no secret that Johnny Cash is a self-proclaimed Christian that he even wrote a book about it. In one of his San Quentin Prison tours, he told how he came about the song, ‘He Turned the Water into Wine’:

“We went into the little town of Canaan just over the hills from Nazareth and there’s a church that sits over the cistern where the water came from that Christ turned to wine, where the first miracle was performed. We went into the church, saw the cisterns; you can hear the sounds of the water in there, hear the echo. I was so impressed when I came out of the church. If I ever had an inspiration I had one then from seeing what I had just seen and heard. And I said under my breath, ‘He turned the water into wine,’ of all things. On the way to Tiberius in the car in the next few minutes I wrote this song.”
