Johnny Cash’s “Cry! Cry! Cry!”: 1st Hit After Serving U.S. Air Force 3

The “Man In Black,” Johnny Cash was one of the best-selling country legends of all time. He was also known for his “I Walk the Line,” “Ring of Fire,” “Get Rhythm,” and “Man in Black.” He also recorded humorous hits such as “One Piece at a Time,” “A Boy Named Sue,” and “Jackson.” Also, the railroad songs including “Hey, Porter,” “Orange Blossom Special,” and “Rock Island Line” made his musical career blow up. But before the success of the songs mentioned earlier, he recorded his very first successful song “Cry Cry Cry.” Cash wrote the song after he had served in the United States Air Force.

The Song…

Johnny Cash himself wrote the song and released it in 1955. The song sold over 100,000 copies in the southern states alone. This made Cash tour with Elvis Presley soon after its release.

In 1954, before the release of the song “Cry! Cry! Cry!”, Cash signed with Sun Records after he came home from serving with the United States Air Force. During that time, he wrote the song “Hey, Porter” which was not catchy to the executives at his record label.

But he was told to come back with a song that Sun Records owner, Sam Phillips, would be able to sell. Cash went home and wrote the song “Cry! Cry! Cry!” overnight. He then came back and performed it to Phillips the following day.

The song then matched with his song “Hey Porter” and released as the B-side of the record. Moreover, Johnny Cash was backed by “The Tennessee Two,” while Luther Perkins led the guitar and Marshall Grant on the bass.

The Lyrics…

The next in line will be someone who loves you

Next in line is me, ’cause it’s my time

Now how long will it be, ’til you end my misery

You better be prepared to linger, when you get to me

The time has come for you to love me, if you ever are

Come to me now, so I can make you mine

I watched them rush to you so fast, waited so I’d be the last

It’s my time, ’cause I’m the next in line

The next in line will hold your love forever

Next in line is me and here I am

Give me a day or two, and I’ll get through to you

You’d been my baby long ago, if you’d turned down a few

This old heart can’t take much more waitin’ for your love

I’m tired, and we’re runnin’ short of time

I’ll make you love me more than everyone before

It’s my time to try, ’cause I’m the next in line

I stood and watched you take their hearts

And break ’em one by one

My time is comin’, so I waited while you had your fun

Now I’m through a-waiting’ way behind

It’s my time, ’cause I’m the next in line

After the release of “Cry! Cry! Cry!”, Cash’s career skyrocketed. He then followed it up with more recordings, concerts, and more performances. Indeed, Johny Cash was one of the most successful country legends all over the world. He touched and moved Country music enthusiasts.
