There is a place and a home where someday we will meet Jesus. But let’s all remember that our hearts would be the best abode to see and connect with him. We are unable to feel Jesus physically, but within us, we can handle his existence.

If we are in a situation right now, we are longing for his presence then this hymn is the best song to listen. It will remind us that someday, somewhat we will meet him on a beautiful shore. “In The Sweet By And By” will, indeed, tell us, Jesus has a glorious gift of love to us.

The Song…

S. Fillmore Bennett is the person behind the words and lyrics of “In The Sweet By And By.” On the other hand, Joseph P. Webster created the music, the melody, and harmony. It was primarily released in 1868. It was then being played over and over up to these days.

Moreover, the hymn is very famous for churches and religious events. Many covers and renditions have been recorded. The noteworthy recordings over the years are from Elvis Presley, Louis Armstrong, Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn and Kenny Rogers.

The Creation…

Joseph P. Webster is a sensitive kind of a songwriter like the other musicians. There is a certain point in his life wherein he undergoes periods of depression. With this, writing songs and hymns were his outlets.

Furthermore, there’s one situation where Webster visited Bennet in his office. He went there in an office hour without speaking to Bennet. Bennet, on the other hand, asked: “Webster, what is the matter now?” “It’s no matter,” he replied, “it will be all right by and by.” Bennet replied “The Sweet By And By.” This made Bennet thought of a hymn write about it. He handed the sheet to Webster and began writing the notes. Afterward, Webster grabbed his violin and started patching the melody of the lyrics. In less than 30 minutes, Bennet, Webster, and two of his friends singing the song already.

The Lyrics…

There’s a land that is fairer than day,

And by faith we can see it afar;

For the Father waits over the way

To prepare us a dwelling place there.

In the sweet by and by,

We shall meet on that beautiful shore;

In the sweet by and by,

We shall meet on that beautiful shore.

We shall sing on that beautiful shore

The melodious songs of the blessed;

And our spirits shall sorrow no more,

Not a sigh for the blessing of rest.

To our bountiful Father above,

We will offer our tribute of praise

For the glorious gift of His love

And the blessings that hallow our days.

This is Kenny Rogers’ cover of the “In The Sweet By And By.”
