“The Beast in Me”: Just Like Johnny Cash, We all Have a Beast in Us

“The Beast in Me”: Just Like Johnny Cash, We all Have a Beast in Us 1

One of Johnny Cash‘s myterious song is “The Beat in Me.” The song was written by Nick Lowe, Cash’s former stepson-in-law. Cash recorde for his 1994 album The Impossible Bird. He had kept the song in his locker for a long time until he found the right time to release it. The song is instrumentally carried solely on the back of Cash’s acoustic guitar.  Along with the music,  his world-weary voice sings the melody alone. The honesty of his pain provokes every listener to relate with his experience. He talks about an inner beast that has been with him his entire life.

If we look further, the song actually  go beyond his own experience, identity, and destiny. It can as well be a reflection of the experience of every human being in the world. While the struggle with self may be uglier in Cash’s case than it is in the case of other individuals, it remains a universal struggle. Cash’s performance makes us believe that there is indeed an inner beast that tries to torment him, like he was struggling with thorough pain as he seeks for redemption.

The War Within

I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.

Romans 7:15-17

Let’s try to relate the song with Bible references. Apostle Paul admit that we get caught in situations where we do what isn’t right. Maybe that’s the kind of beast Johnny Cash was talking about. Sometimes we don’t understand ourselves. We even compromise our decisions and choose those that can bring us harm or danger. Maybe this is the effect of a soul that hankers for total illumination. we all have questions and cravings, and we won’t be satisfied unless that certain hankering will be fulfilled. In search for the answer, we bravely do the risks, even we know that it might lead us to destruction in the end.

No warning can ever be effective if its the heart that hungers for completion. May we then turn to God at these kind of time where we don’t know what to do, or where to go. God has answer for everything, just trust in him.
