Loving someone who isn’t ready to commit to you is a heartbreaking experience because you know that you cannot force that person to like you no matter what you do. However, this song is not about the person who is heartbroken but it’s about the side of the person who is not ready to commit.
Bob Dylan’s Song
“It Ain’t Me Babe” is a folk song originally written and performed by Bob Dylan in 1964. This was one of the tracks in Bob Dylan’s fourth studio album Another Side of Bob Dylan. It was said that the beginning words of the song were based from John Jacob Niles’ song “Go ‘Way From My Window.” Furthermore, the lyrics “no, no, no” was the opposite of the Beatles “Yeah, yeah, yeah” from their song “She Loves You.”
Johnny Cash and Other Artists’ Version
The popularity of the song made various artists of different genres record the song. This includes Johnny Cash and June Carter, Joan Baez, Nancy Sinatra, and The Turtles. Johnny Cash’s version peaked at No. 4 on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in 1965. In addition, “It Ain’t Me Babe” entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart at No. 58. Johnny Cash included the song on his album Orange Blossom Special in 1965. The Turtles version of the song peaked at No. 8 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
About the Song
The song is about a man who is not ready to commit to his lover. He said that he could not be the man of her dreams. The narrator told the woman she better finds another man who could love her more. The woman seems to like the narrator of the song because she tries to win his feelings, despite already telling her that he cannot be in a serious relationship with her.
