“The Little Girl” is a song written by Harley Allen and recorded by John Michael Montgomery. It was released on August 29, 2000, and it reached number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song features harmony vocals by Bluegrass Musicians.

John Montgomery’s Song Content

John Montgomery’s song “The Little Girl” portrays a young girl who was raised by an alcoholic father and drug-addict mother. The couple regularly fought in front of the young girl. Therefore, she often hid behind the couch. In addition, she has no friends to support her and a religion that could tell her about God.

The young girl’s most heartbreaking night came when she witnessed the murder-suicide of her parents wherein her father killed her mother and then himself. By the help of some people in the city, the young girl was sent to a loving, caring, God-fearing family. The family attends church regularly.

It was Sunday when the young girl went to church for the first time. She noticed a picture of Jesus hanging on the cross. When she was asked, she didn’t know the man’s name. The young girl may not know God’s name but she felt that the man in the cross was the man who helped her during her parents’ violent deaths.

The Lyric

Her Daddy drank all day and Mommy did drugs
Never wanted to play, or give kisses and hugs

This lyric shows how irresponsible the young girl’s parents are. The family lacks communication. The young girl suffers from her parents’ injustice. We must always remember that every child must be treated as a blessing from above.
