‘It’s 5 O’clock Somewhere’ skyrocketed Alan Jackson’s music career when released in 2003. He, together with Jimmy Buffett, won awards in major categories. But did you know the beach vibe song was never meant for Alan Jackson?
Jim Brown and Don Rollins were the writers for “It’s 5 O’clock Somewhere’ that shot Jackson and Buffett to larger fame. The song is about the main character convincing himself that it’s okay if he drinks during work hours because he is not paid fairly. Moreover, 5 p.m. is universally the time to get off work and have a happy hour. It is even accompanied by a beach-y melody and a Buffett vibe.
Jimmy Buffett was in the songwriters’ Don Rollins and Jim Brown’s minds when they wrote the song. At that time, Brown worked on an album for Sony and asked him to write a beach and Buffett vibe song. Colt Prather, a fresh new artist, was supposed to sing the hit single but passed on after it was completed and pitched.
After that, they offered it to Country beach king Kenny Chesney but passed on it too. Brown revealed in a 2010 interview that he believes Chesney turned down ‘It’s 5 O’clock Somewhere’ as the latter don’t want to do beachy songs anymore.
When Alan Jackson first heard the song, he immediately asked to put it on hold. The songwriters were surprised but later found out the country superstar wants to do a duet with Buffett.
A song about drinking at 5 p.m. hit the number one spot in Billboards Hot Country Song chart. On top of that, they did it for a total of eight weeks at the start of August 9, 2003.
Fans loved it so much that it shot in the mainstream Hot 100. ‘It’s 5 o’clock somewhere’ ended up at No. 17, which is a great achievement for a country song crossover. Lastly, it won Vocal Event of the Year on the CMA Award, making it Alan Jackson’s biggest hit of his whole music career.
