Intuiting Bryan White’s Sentiment on “Someone Else’s Star” 1

Human as we are, it’s inevitable for us to turn emotional every once in a while. It’s a trait that makes us distinct from the rest of God’s creations.

Our sentiments emanate from various sources. Most, our manifold relationships with our fellow humans and everything that surrounds us is powerful factors that trigger our sensibility.

And once our emotions are activated by something else, our responses are as copious as their stimulating factors are. But generally, what’s going on inside us is plainly manifested in our actions. sometimes, our doings could hardly conceal what we’re going through.

For musicians…

Without a doubt, musically inclined people would resort to music to express their sentiments. It’s the most artistic channel for them to convey something they’re up to at the moment, be it positive or otherwise. For example, someone who feels being blessed with a wonderful family would write a song describing happiness and contentment. On the other hand, a person who failed to achieve something may pen a song that displays disappointment and hopelessness.

On Bryan White’s Case

Bryan White’s “Someone Else’s Star” is a song that somewhat connotes he’s in a melancholic state. As he sings,

Alone again tonight
Without someone to love
The stars are shining bright
So one more wish goes up

The lyrics clearly indicate that his solitude is due to the fact that something, or more precisely, someone in his life is missing. That missing piece could have otherwise made his life complete and happier too. As he continues,

Oh, I wish I may
And I wish with all my might
For the love I’m dreaming of
And missing in my life

Initially, he is full of hope that what he’s dreaming of would eventually come true. Seeing that others get what he wishes for, White remained persistent his time will come before long. But suddenly, he began a bit disdainful in the chorus.

I guess I must be wishing on
Someone else’s star
It seems like someone else keeps getting
What I’m wishing for

Why can’t I be as lucky
As those other people are
I guess I must be wishing
On someone else’s star

The has had a forlorn melody and gentle pacing that perfectly matched its message. And though White failed to get his wish, as the song suggested, this song turned successful landing his first No. 1 single on Hot Country Songs chart.
