Stuck In A Boat? Cling To “Help, Help Me, Jesus” by Wanda Jackson

I cried help, help me Jesus

I’m lost and I can’t see

In the middle of the night,

Please turn on the light.

Wanda Jackson has released a hymn that was not popular. But, when I came across this song on Youtube, I admired how the lyrics were sung sincerely. “Help, help me Jesus”, is a phrase we usually use every day. Even with just a slip in the road, we need those words.

Stuck In A Boat? Cling To "Help, Help Me, Jesus" by Wanda Jackson 1

Who Else Needed Help?

Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”

(Matthew 8:23-25)

Jesus’ disciples needed help when they were on a boat. Like that experience, the storms of life often come on to us unpredictably and because of that, they hit us with shattering forces. Without warning, furious storms come up. Often, there is no time to prepare for it. There is no time to think decisions through. There is no time to deal with death. Also, there is no time to ponder on why someone might have grudges in us. These things hit us without notice, which makes it an all-out storm. It shakes us to the core. And, sometimes, in our attempt to survive, we try to swim in the waters. Sadly, we are not sure if we will be able to survive. An island may just be a couple hours away, suddenly, it is something that we may never even see. Our self-assurance is crushed. And, when we feel frail and alone, we look to God, and where is he? In the bible verse, Jesus was sleeping. We expect Jesus to be awake and say,

“Don’t worry. I am here. Everything will be okay.”

But Then Again, Jesus Was Sleeping….

When we say,

“Help, help me Jesus”,

does he answer right away? Why does God not do something about it? Why does God not take control and do something? While it seems God is asleep, he is not. He is ever observant. There is never a moment when we are out of his sight and protection. Are you also facing a storm in your life this morning? Ask Jesus for help. Do not be ashamed. Reach out to Jesus. Just fix your eyes on Him. Everything will be alright. Even if the boat overturns, you will be safe because Jesus is in the boat with you.
