Love is a beautiful thing. But sometimes, things change and the woman you once cherished turns to someone you just can’t stand any longer. Suddenly, your life becomes a country song!
The Song is his Old Man’s Idea
While Gil’s mother was sweet saying that she didn’t care if she had a rich kid, she only wanted a happy kid, Gil’s father was a little more humorous in his approval. Gill talked a lot about his father, whom he described as “a lawyer by trade and a redneck by choice.” Also, a man who was quick and harsh with his discipline. The elder Gill died in 1997.
Years later, Gil would take an idea his dad had a song and, with the help of Rodney Crowell, turn it into the left-field lament,
“It’s Hard to Kiss the Lips at Night That Chew Your Ass Out All Day Long.”
In one of his performances of the song, Gil shared that one thing they do religiously together was watching country music shows on television. They never missed a Porter Wagoner show. His father would always ask him to make popcorn for them to eat while watching. Twenty years later, they started reminiscing, Vince asked his dad to sing a Porter Wagner song. In return, his Dad said,
“I don’t know any Porter Wagoner song.”
Vince was surprised because they watch every weekend. To which his dad replied,
‘You did. Listen, pal, I was watchin’ Dolly.”
As he was struggling to make rent most months. Playing in the streets a lot to make a living. He’s always positive and had great reinforcing words. He became Vince’s biggest critic ‘worse than any writer’ as Vince said. A couple of years before his dad died, he got a call from Dolly Parton and asked Vince to have a duet of “I Will Always Love You” with her. He called his Dad at 1:30 in the morning to let him know about it. Undoubtedly, the old man rushed from Ohio to Tennessee as fast as he could get.
Is it For Dolly or Vince’s Mother?
When Vince presented the idea to Rodney Crowell, he liked it so much that he said,
“Man, that’s awesome. That’s better than anything we’re workin’ on. Let’s write it right now for your old man.”
“It’s Hard to Kiss the Lips at Night That Chew Your Ass Out All Day Long” then become a reunion single of ‘The Notorious Cherry Bombs’ band. Previously, they were named ‘The Cherry Bombs’ backing Rodney Crowell. Right, Vince Gil was also one of the band’s member. Pretty funny that the idea came up after his dad met Dolly Parton. After explaining to his skeptical wife, Amy Grant, that “It’s Hard to Kiss” was not a slam at her, Gill said he had an epiphany:
“Sadly, it dawned on me that the song must have been about my mother.”
