Grief to Gospel: How “Thy Will” Healed Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum

Grief to Gospel: How “Thy Will” Healed Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum 1

The Turning Point

It was September 2015 when Lady Antebellum had one of their first headlining concert at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. Hillary Scott was ready to heavily dose herself with pain medication in order not to miss that concert.  Most people didn’t know, when Scott walked on stage, she was about nine weeks pregnant. Earlier that week, her doctor told her something might be wrong. She chose to fight fear for his upcoming hometown concert and took the stage with bandmates, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood. A show that awed more than 12,000 people. The following week, she learned she had lost the baby. Hillary Scott sought comfort from her family. She held on to her faith even more and with the help and support of Nashville’s music community, she turned her difficult times into music that reflects hope and light.

The album was already in the process when Scott suffered her miscarriage. Thus, her journey through grief inspired its lead single “Thy Will,” which Scott penned with Emily Weisband and Bernie Herms. The writing appointment was scheduled months before. It also fell in the middle of her health crisis. Nevertheless, Scott decided to keep it. She shared,

“I was like, ‘I’m not going to cancel these. I know I have something to talk about now … thy will be done, those four words were all I could pray through that. It just kept resurfacing in so many different areas in my life that it was just God’s way of going, ‘Pay attention to this.’’

Until She Was Healed

In the following weeks and months, the Scott family huddled together in the recording studio. Despite Hillary’s loss, the album expressed the power and strength of family. Faith and family have just really come first in her life. Hillary Scott and the Scott Family released their gospel album “Love Remains” in April 2016 with “Thy Will” as its lead single.

After experiencing a miscarriage in 2015, the song finds Hillary learning to move forward and accept her circumstances knowing that God has a plan.
